About the trip

The trip to Tarifa not only gives us the chance to explore a beautiful region, but also to discover an unexpected variety of marine life in the Strait of Gibraltar!
When people think of dolphins and whales, Europe probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind. But right off the coast of Tarifa, we can encounter several species of dolphins every day and also have the chance to observe large whales!
Bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, and striped dolphins are sighted very regularly. In addition, we have a good chance every day of seeing pilot whales and the world’s largest toothed whales, the sperm whales! Especially in late spring and summer, large fin whales also pass by!

During our time in Tarifa, we also want to show you something of this magnificent region and introduce you to the local cuisine!

We are accommodated in a great hotel directly at the harbor of Tarifa. On the tours we alternate between large, comfortable boats and small, agile motorboats. For transportation, we use a comfortable people carrier and can often move around on foot.

A humpback whale surfaces in the open sea, with water splashing all around it.

The Animals

Various species of dolphin can be found in the Strait of Gibraltar all year round. In spring, large whales are also more common!

We find one or more dolphin species on every tour. These include bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins and striped dolphins. These sociable animals often come very close to the boats or even into the bow wave! These are always great experiences.
We also see pilot whales up to 6 meters long almost every day! These impressive dolphins often swim through the Strait in families of up to 30 animals.
With a bit of luck, we may also catch a glimpse of the larger inhabitants of the seas during our week. Sperm whales, the largest toothed whales in the world, are increasingly found off the coast at this time of year and fin whales also occasionally pass by in the direction of the Atlantic!

Accommodation & Catering

During our time on the south coast of Spain we stay in a beautiful hotel right by the sea. The rooms are very pleasantly furnished and the hotel impresses with its great service and fantastic views of the sea.
We enjoy the extensive breakfast buffet and one or two evening meals in the hotel's own restaurant.
We also get out and about in the area and eat at other selected restaurants.

Daily Programme

Weather permitting, we head out to sea twice a day to watch whales and dolphins.
The first tour starts around 9 a.m. and lasts about 2–3 hours.
After lunch, we head out again in the afternoon for another 2–3 hours. Back on land and after a well-deserved shower, we enjoy a drink and round off the evening with a good dinner and, hopefully, plenty of whale stories!
On one or two days, we swap the afternoon trip for a sightseeing tour to explore the stunning coastlines of Andalusia.

If the sea tours are canceled due to wind & waves, we will make excursions in the surrounding area instead!

Equipment & Photography

The climate in Andalusia in spring is quite pleasant, enjoying 18-25 degrees during the day. It can get cooler out at sea, so a jacket won't hurt. In the evening it cools down, so long clothing is advisable.

For photographers we recommend medium lenses (100-300mm). The dolphins and whales often come relatively close to the boats and quickly fill the viewfinder with their size!
