Trip Report - Adventure in Sri Lanka (March 2026)
Sri Lanka is a vacation paradise for many tourists. But while most visitors explore the southern part of the country, we’re heading off the beaten path in search of wildlife!
For 10 days, we headed out to sea along the west coast of Sri Lanka in search of whales and dolphins—and we weren’t disappointed! The diversity of species in the region is fantastic! We were particularly thrilled by the large, playful pods of spinner dolphins with their massive leaps! We also spotted bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, and Fraser’s dolphins, some of which were even diving below the surface!
But we also managed to spot the large whales, our main target! We saw Bryde’s whales several times—one of the few species of baleen whales that does not migrate to cold waters.
It was only thanks to a lot of patience that we were also able to observe sperm whales—two large males suddenly appeared near us, leaving all participants speechless.
The fact that we didn’t see any more sperm whales is likely due to sightings of other animals—orcas! For several days, we spotted various groups of orcas and were even able to see the animals beneath the water’s surface—what a stroke of luck!
We also got to see rare pygmy sperm whales and pilot whales. The diversity of marine life really surprised us all!
But we didn’t just want to see what the sea had to offer—we wanted to explore the land as well! So we went on a three-day trip to Wilpattu National Park with a group. Wilpattu is a paradise, especially for bird lovers! Kingfishers, owls, eagles, and many other species show little fear of the safari vehicles and often perch just a few meters away from the trails.
Sri Lanka is famous for its leopards, and thanks to a lot of patience, we weren’t disappointed either! We watched as a leopard returned several times to a killed sambar deer to feed on it—what an experience! In addition, some of our group also spotted sloth bears along the road—on the very same day as the leopard!
Elephants also live in the forests of Sri Lanka. However, they are rarely seen in large herds like in Africa. We observed several solitary elephants—often in the deeper waters of lakes—what a spectacle!
We had a wonderful time in Sri Lanka—thank you to all our guests for the great moments we were able to share, despite a few flight issues here and there!
If you're interested in visiting Sri Lanka—we'll be back in 2027!
